The original complement of Liebman, pianist Richie Beirach, and bassist Frank Tusa had been expanded to include trumpeter Randy Brecker, and drummer Al Foster replacing Bob Moses. While mainly a blowing session on standards and removed from the improvisationally inclined smaller combos, the recording reflects Liebman’s still devout lineage derived from the tenor sax of John Coltrane, while also exploring possibilities on the soprano sax that he took up, abandoned for a time, and brought back to his heart in a more enduring manner. It is the cohesion of the band that is impressive, how Beirach takes the bull by the horns, gladly wrestling with these melodies, and why Brecker was emerging as an individualist within the neo-bop realm, shedding any previous influences to also become the perfect teammate. Of the three tracks from the Artists House LP, Beirach’s composition “Pendulum,” at over 18-plus minutes, perfectly reflects the swing and sway motion of its title, with suspended tension and release, a hallmark for Liebman’s tenor lead and Brecker’s trumpet fill-ins. Wayne Shorter’s “Footprints” sports an insistent two-beat snare drum module from Foster buoying Liebman’s fluttery soprano sax in a lime green harmony. There are two takes — the only ever released — of the saxophonist’s composition “Picadilly Lilly,” one an easy swinger with Brecker sitting out, the other closer to a ballad, while standards such as the bright, bopping “There Is No Greater Love,” an exceptional tandem approach by the horns on “Solar,” and a fired-up Beirach urging Brecker’s trumpet lead during “Night & Day” highlight the second CD. Kenny Dorham’s “Blue Bossa” is modified in a montuno-derived piano mode à la Eddie Palmieri with the insistent horns, and Liebman’s original “Bonnie’s Blues” cast in a short, circular swing, has plenty of good feeling. The quintet’s take of Thelonious Monk’s “Well, You Needn’t” is a truly great interpretation with Tusa and Foster digging in for the long, 18-minute haul as all join in together. You naturally hear the Coltrane influence in the tenor saxophonist’s sinews during the hard bopper “Impressions,” where Liebman extrapolates in a way unlike any other player with similar influence. Here he truly transcends the icon and hero that shaped his sound without any contrivance, expounding on the sheets of sound aspect of ‘Trane and taking it into another, higher realm, fed by Beirach’s futuristic off-minor piano pushing and prodding.
